I have Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac version 12.1.0 and am trying to download the update 12.2.0 or later. All of the links for download any of the updates appear to be broken. I started out trying to use the Microsoft AutoUpdate, which told me I needed 12.2.0, but when I clicked for it to Install, even it failed. That is when I went to the web site that was listed for detailed information, and from that web site, the link to download the 12.2.0 update was broken.

What amuses me the most, however, is that like Hawking, I too believe that contact with ET would likely be fatal, and not because of phasers and death rays, but whatever uninvited microscopic guests they were carrying along. Of course, our tiny stowaways would likely be just as devastating to them, resulting in not one decimated population, but two. Sadly, the failure of SETI, again in my opinion, is not as you suggest that nobody is out there, but simply that the distances are far too great. If life existed on a planet 100 light-years away, we would not be detecting optical signals until those signals were 100 years old. Timing is everything. We've been listening for 50 years. What if those signals went out a million years ago?

Small aside: Leopard is still my main boot, with Snow Leopard as an experimental hard drive on my Mac Pro. The lack of a true QuickTime Pro version in Snow Leopard keeps me from using that as my primary boot, similar to some of your issues about WindowShade.

• I probably should have checked this forum before taking my son's advice to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6. Ever since this upgrade, I've had repeated and frustrating problems with two applications: MS Office 2008 for the Mac and Google Earth for the Mac. Note that I did an 'in-place' upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, i.e., I inserted the installation DVD into my iMac and then double-clicked on 'Install Mac OS X'. Office 2008: Ever since the Snow Leopard upgrade, MS Office 2008 has been crashing. Typically, it's Entourage crashing when a crash does occur because that's the office app that I run 95% of the time. However, whenever Entourage crashes and I try to launch Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, they won't launch either.

Here's more info and how to patch it: Users with the original DVDs will need Rosetta to launch the Microsoft AutoUpdater (MAU) to update. After that Rosetta is not required for Office 2008.

Macbook pro i5. We found the shape-shifting neither terribly distracting nor useful. For simple tweaks such as changing fonts, you'll need to consult floating formatting boxes. Being accustomed to Office for Windows, we'd rather find all these options at the top of the screen. Office for Mac saves work in the same, new Open XML formats used by Office 2007 for Windows. We're not thrilled about this being the default option, even though you can save your work in the older DOC, XLS and PPT formats. Won't be available until as long as 10 weeks from now, or 8 weeks after the applications are available in stores.
